Crew Boss
Definition:
The Crew Boss directs the activities of the hand crew in both emergency and non-emergency situations; assists in administration of the hand crew program. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This Crew Boss reports directly to the Fire Chief. The Crew Boss works with the Hand Crew Administrator for overall program administration. The Crew Boss directs all aspects of the hand crew’s operations. This class differs from the Squad Boss in that the incumbent has responsibilities for the overall hand crew program’s operations, training and management while the Squad Boss has responsibilities for daily and direct supervision of a crew's activities.
Examples Of Duties:
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
• Develops and administers training to the hand crew in fire ground basics and safety.
• Plans, organizes, implements and supervises all phases of community project work.
• Supervises emergency work in response to wildland fires; participates in controlled burns.
• Participates in a departmental physical fitness program.
• Maintains discipline, determines that rules are observed and orders properly executed.
• Coordinates crew's interface with other organizations, while operating in emergency and non-emergency settings including helicopter operations.
• Directs maintenance (housekeeping) of crew camp, vehicles, tools, equipment, PPE, and miscellaneous repairs.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualification Guidelines:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Working knowledge of: principles of supervision, training, management techniques and public relations.
Thorough knowledge of: modern firefighting tactics and strategies; fire hazards and potentially dangerous situations; principles of wildland firefighting; methods of fire/fuel breaks; general fireline construction principles and techniques.
Working ability to: plan, organize, direct and control activities in fire suppression; use firefighting equipment and tools; analyze fire suppression problems and adopt an appropriate course of action; read incident maps/plans and create materials list, order required supplies; communicate effectively in an oral and written manner; read, comprehend and apply department policies, regulation, instructions and established fire suppression procedures; maintain effective relationships with employees, the public, and other agencies. To function as the team leader.
Supplemental Information:
Duties are performed primarily in an outdoor environment and involve moderate and heavy activities for prolonged periods including being deployed in excess of 14 consecutive days. Incumbents may regularly be exposed to dangerous conditions including poison oak.
Ability to meet “arduous” level performance testing “the pack test” (carry a 45-pound pack for 3 miles in 45 minutes).
Education/Experience & Other Desirable Qualifications:
Crew Boss (CRWB) certification preferred.
Three years of full time experience in wildland firefighting with training in the following. Desirable training certifications S-130, S-190, L-180, S-131, S-133, S-211, S-212, S-270*, S-215, S-234, S-260, S-290, L-280.
Knowledge and use of the incident command system (ICS 100, 200) and IS-700 NIMS.*
Possess and maintain a valid California driver license (subject to DMV check).*
High School Diploma/G.E.D. or higher level education.*
Emergency medical training (i.e. EMR or EMT).
Possession of a firefighter endorsement.

Squad Boss
Definition:
Under direction, performs and supervises a variety of tasks and personnel during fire prevention, suppression and related duties as part of a hand crew.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
The Hand Crew - Squad Boss differs from the Hand Crew - Senior Crew Member in that the incumbent performs tasks of increasing complexity; supervises assigned personnel; and can act as the Hand Crew Supervisor.
Examples Of Duties:
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
• To be the lead worker, guiding, checking, correcting and reporting on the work of a crew while working with them.
• Perform various types of semi-skilled labor in support of fire prevention and suppression efforts. Examples include: cut and remove brush from roadsides, fire roads, and fuel breaks using hand and power tools; clear defensible space around and adjacent to structures; construct fireline and perform mop-up during wildland fires.
• Performs maintenance work on fire department equipment and minor vehicle service and repair.
• Performs maintenance work on fire department facilities such as landscaping, carpentry, masonry, paving, plumbing, fabrication, demolition, painting and paint preparations.
• Operates vehicles and specialized equipment.
• Performs flood control activities such as trenching, sandbagging, and debris removal.
• Maintains a daily log and accounts for assigned personnel work hours.
• Secures crew's quarters and equipment.
• Serves as a safety officer on fire lines and informs the Crew Supervisor of any problems; assumes duties of Crew Supervisor during his/her absence for brief periods of time.
• Participates in a departmental physical fitness program.
• May be transported to emergency or work sites by various means, including fixed wing or rotary aircraft.
• Other duties as assigned.

Working knowledge of: vehicles, specialized equipment, hand and power tools, radios, satellite phones and gps units utilized by Big Sur Fire. Working knowledge and ability to perform maintenance work on department equipment, vehicles, facilities and related maintenance tasks.
Thorough knowledge of: incident command system, leadership principles and practices, wildland fire behavior, department safety practices, policies, and procedures pertinent to the effective performance of the position.
Working ability to: lead, guide, check, correct, and report on the work of a crew while working with them; work under hazardous conditions for prolonged periods performing extremely physical tasks; establish effective working relationships with others and function as part of a team.

Senior Crew Member
Definition:
Under direction, performs a variety of tasks of increasing difficulty involving fire prevention, suppression and related duties as part of a hand crew.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
The Hand Crew Senior Crew Member differs from the Hand Crew Crew Member in that the incumbent performs tasks of increasing complexity and can act as a lead worker.
Examples Of Duties:
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
